World’s First Fully Electric Hydrofoil Pilot Boat EF-12 Unveiled

Artemis Technologies has unveiled the EF-12, the world’s first fully electric, zero-emission hydrofoil pilot boat. Designed to support one of the most demanding operations in the maritime industry—the transfer of marine pilots to and from large vessels—the EF-12 aims to significantly improve both safety and sustainability. Powered by the company’s Artemis eFoiler electric propulsion system, the next-generation vessel delivers exceptional stability even at high speeds while reducing the risks traditionally associated with pilot transfer operations.

Marine pilots play a critical role in global shipping, using their extensive knowledge of local waterways and navigational hazards to guide large vessels safely into and out of ports. During transfers, pilots often have to move between two moving vessels under challenging sea conditions, making it one of the most hazardous tasks in the maritime sector. Conventional pilot boats are therefore designed with deep-V hulls, high-speed capabilities, and reinforced fenders to withstand impacts while maintaining stability in rough waters.

Developed by Belfast-based Artemis Technologies, the EF-12 Pilot combines these demanding operational requirements with an advanced electric propulsion platform. The vessel is powered by Artemis’ proprietary eFoiler technology, which features carbon fiber hydrofoils and an electronically controlled flight system. By lifting the hull above the water’s surface, the hydrofoils dramatically reduce hydrodynamic drag while minimizing wake generation, helping to reduce shoreline erosion in busy port environments.

The EF-12 reaches a top speed of 32 knots and offers an operating range of 45 to 55 nautical miles on a single charge. Equipped with ultra-fast DC charging technology, the vessel can be recharged in less than one hour. Its active stabilization system keeps the deck level even while underway, making pilot transfers significantly safer and more comfortable. According to Artemis Technologies CEO Dr. Iain Percy, the EF-12 has been specifically designed to meet the demanding requirements of pilotage services while providing ports worldwide with an efficient, fully electric, and zero-emission solution.
