The World’s First Flexible Perovskite Solar Tile Has Been Developed

Dutch research organization TNO, in collaboration with thin-film specialist ASAT, has introduced the world’s first roof tile design based on flexible perovskite solar cell technology. This innovative product, which offers aesthetic compatibility with traditional building materials, achieved an efficiency rate of 12.4% through solar panel technology integrated into a curved composite surface. Developed using roll-to-roll methods suitable for industrial-scale mass production, this technology enables buildings to generate energy without compromising their visual appearance. Expected to enter the commercial market in the near future, this development is regarded as a critical milestone for modern architecture and sustainable urbanization.

The Netherlands-based research institute TNO has unveiled a pioneering solar roof tile with flexible perovskite technology as a result of its partnership with ASAT. This innovation represents the first example of a curved composite tile successfully combined with a perovskite solar panel. Designed for seamless integration into the built environment, the technology uses industrially ready roll-to-roll production methods. This breakthrough, which allows electricity generation without disrupting the aesthetic appearance of modern building designs, represents a strategic advance for sustainable architecture.

Researchers at TNO crossed a new threshold in renewable energy by developing the world’s first functional electricity-generating solar roof tile using flexible perovskite solar cells. The team applied a perovskite solar panel on foil to a curved composite structure, proving that solar energy harvesting can be directly incorporated into traditional construction materials. The combined unit reached an efficiency of 12.4%, while the standalone efficiency of the panels before being mounted on the curved surface was recorded at 13.8%. TNO senior scientist Ilke Dogan stated that the curved geometry of the tile had a negligible effect on the solar panel’s performance, emphasizing the versatility of the flexible technology.
