Chinese automotive giant FAW Group, in collaboration with Lishen Battery for its Hongqi brand, has successfully concluded testing on its next-generation ultra-fast charging battery. In trials conducted at an ambient temperature of 25°C, the battery surged from 10% to 70% state of charge (SoC) in just 3 minutes and 41 seconds. Reaching a 97% charge level in 8 minutes and 3 seconds, the technology achieves a remarkably high peak charging rate of 12C. This breakthrough elevates the ongoing fast-charging competition across China’s electric vehicle landscape to an unprecedented level.
According to technical specifications released by FAW Group, this performance boost is driven by high-efficiency ultra-fast charging anodes. The engineering team engineered a proprietary electrolyte formulation with low desolvation energy to accelerate lithium-ion kinetics. In addition, composite carbon coating and doping methods reduced internal resistance by 15%, significantly enhancing both charge response time and energy transfer efficiency.
To manage heat dissipation during intense power throughput, the battery pack incorporates an intelligent, uniform liquid cooling architecture. This system safeguards operational reliability by keeping thermal gradients across the battery pack under 3°C throughout high-rate charging. Utilizing an adaptive charging strategy bounded by strict safety thresholds, the technology monitors cell heating rates in real time to dynamically modulate power delivery. Closed-loop voltage and capacity monitoring further mitigates risks such as overcharging or thermal-induced voltage surges.
This technological race, which has intensified among EV manufacturers in China since the start of the year, is further fueled by innovations such as BYD’s Blade Battery 2.0 and Geely’s Golden Brick battery. FAW Group’s latest development underscores a firm determination to make ultra-fast charging capabilities the industry benchmark.
