Chinese Automakers Target 2027 for Solid-State Battery Rollout

The automotive industry is approaching a major milestone in the commercialization of solid-state batteries, a technology expected to deliver higher energy density, faster charging, and improved safety compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries. Leading Chinese automakers—including BYD, SAIC Motor, Changan Automobile, Chery, and Dongfeng—have identified 2027 as the key year for the initial mass production of solid-state battery-powered vehicles. With driving range targets exceeding 1,000 kilometers, the next-generation technology is expected to accelerate the transition to electric mobility while complementing existing lithium-ion and sodium-ion battery technologies rather than replacing them entirely.

Following the launch of its Blade Battery 2.0 platform, BYD plans to begin limited production of sulfide-based solid-state batteries in 2027. The company aims to scale up to full commercial production by 2030, leveraging the high stability and long service life offered by sulfide electrolytes. The new batteries are expected to debut in BYD’s premium Denza and Yangwang brands before gradually expanding into mass-market electric vehicles.

Other major Chinese manufacturers are following similar roadmaps. SAIC Motor, which already markets vehicles equipped with semi-solid-state batteries, intends to introduce fully solid-state batteries with energy densities exceeding 400 Wh/kg by 2027. Meanwhile, Changan Automobile and Chery are developing next-generation battery systems capable of delivering driving ranges of more than 1,500 kilometers on a single charge.

The race to commercialize solid-state batteries extends well beyond China. Global automotive manufacturers, including Mercedes-Benz, are actively testing advanced solid-state battery technologies developed by U.S.-based Factorial Energy. By replacing flammable liquid electrolytes with solid materials, these batteries aim to significantly improve safety by reducing the risk of thermal runaway while delivering higher efficiency and longer driving ranges. Industry experts view solid-state batteries as a critical step toward the next generation of electric vehicles and a key technology for strengthening the global EV ecosystem.
