Residential Energy Storage Systems Are Rapidly Expanding in Spain

Residential energy storage systems for self-generated electricity are experiencing rapid growth in Spain, driven by declining battery costs and increasing consumer demand. Over the past year, the country’s distributed energy storage market expanded by 65%, while battery adoption in residential installations nearly doubled. Newly installed storage capacity reached 540 MWh, a milestone that the Spanish Photovoltaic Union (UNEF) considers essential for improving grid flexibility and resilience. Industry representatives are now urging the government to accelerate regulatory reforms and simplify administrative procedures to support further market expansion.

According to data published by UNEF, battery installations for self-consumption increased from 327 MWh in 2024 to 540 MWh. The residential segment recorded an impressive 99% growth, with battery systems included in 61% of all newly installed residential solar self-consumption projects last year. Demand for energy storage solutions has also grown significantly across commercial and industrial sectors, reflecting the increasing importance of battery storage in maximizing renewable energy use.

UNEF Director General José Donoso stated that technological advancements and falling battery prices have made integrated solar-plus-storage systems more affordable and accessible. He emphasized the need for Spain to promptly implement the Royal Decree on self-consumption and distributed energy storage, enabling consumers to maximize the country’s abundant solar energy potential.

To remove barriers to further market growth, UNEF is calling for legislation that enables surplus energy sharing and formally recognizes distributed energy storage within the regulatory framework. The association also recommends increasing the weight of the variable energy component in electricity bills to encourage greater energy efficiency and conservation.

UNEF is also advocating for simplified administrative procedures by exempting installations that export less than 15 kW to the grid from connection permit requirements. Furthermore, the organization proposes extending these streamlined procedures to all projects with grid access capacities of up to 500 kW, reducing bureaucracy and accelerating the deployment of distributed renewable energy systems.
