Hyundai is strengthening its manufacturing operations in Türkiye by establishing a €55 million battery production facility at its İzmit plant. As part of a broader €715 million investment program, the highly automated facility will initially create more than 300 jobs. The plant will produce battery packs for the new IONIQ 3, whose mass production is scheduled to begin in August, while also laying the foundation for future locally produced electric and hybrid vehicle models.
The new facility, developed in collaboration with Hyundai Mobis, will use advanced automation systems to assemble battery cells into complete battery packs without manual handling. Built on a 30,000-square-meter site, the factory will operate with 27 industrial robots. Hyundai aims to manufacture 27,000 battery packs during the first year of operation and increase production to more than 40,000 units the following year. NMC battery cells will be sourced from Hungary, while LFP battery cells for shorter-range models will be supplied from China.
Hyundai Motor Türkiye’s Vice President of Sales, Marketing, and After-Sales, Murat Berkel, stated that the company has produced 3.3 million vehicles at its İzmit facility since 1997, emphasizing that the new investment represents a strategic milestone for both Türkiye’s automotive industry and Hyundai’s local growth strategy. The battery plant will not only support the production of the IONIQ 3 but will also provide manufacturing infrastructure for future electric and hybrid vehicles while strengthening the domestic supplier ecosystem.
The IONIQ 3, which will become the second electric vehicle manufactured in Türkiye, is expected to roll off the production line in August and reach customers in September with two battery options and different powertrain configurations. Through this investment, Hyundai aims to expand its production capacity, enhance its technological capabilities, and make a significant contribution to Türkiye’s economy and employment.
