Danish renewable energy developer European Energy has officially launched construction of a 225.5 MW agrivoltaics project near Vizzini in Sicily, Italy. Backed by an investment exceeding €200 million, the facility is set to become one of Italy’s largest agrivoltaics plants and one of the most significant agricultural solar projects in Europe. Designed with solar panels mounted 1.3 meters above the ground, the project is expected to generate approximately 405 GWh of electricity annually—enough to supply around 135,000 households. By combining renewable energy generation with ongoing agricultural activities, the project represents a major step toward sustainable land use.
Beyond electricity production, the facility incorporates a multifunctional land management approach that includes reforestation, biodiversity conservation, and grazing areas for approximately 820 sheep. The project is supported under Italy’s FER X Transitional Difference Contract scheme, providing long-term revenue stability for the developer. European Energy is overseeing the entire project lifecycle—from engineering and procurement to construction—as part of its broader 513 MW solar portfolio across Sicily, Puglia, and Molise.
Company representatives emphasized that the project was developed in close cooperation with local authorities and community stakeholders to ensure that renewable energy generation complements agricultural production. According to European Energy Vice President Jens-Peter Zink, the project’s scale, stable revenue framework, and grid connection make it a strategic asset within Europe’s renewable energy market.
The initiative reflects the growing momentum behind large-scale agrivoltaics across Europe, where projects that successfully combine clean energy generation with environmental protection and agricultural productivity are increasingly becoming a priority. By demonstrating that farmland can simultaneously support food production, biodiversity, and renewable electricity generation, the Vizzini project establishes a strong model for the future of sustainable energy development.
