Cylib Establishes Major Battery Recycling Facility in Bavaria

Aachen-based battery recycling company cylib has expanded its operational footprint by acquiring a facility in Wernberg-Köblitz, Bavaria. Acquired as part of insolvency proceedings, this site will manage the discharging, shredding, and mechanical processing of end-of-life electric vehicle batteries. With a targeted processing capacity of 10,000 metric tons per year, the facility is scheduled to begin operations in the final quarter of 2026. This strategic acquisition reinforces the company’s battery recycling value chain and will supply intermediate raw materials directly to its hydrometallurgical plant in Dormagen.

Positioned near key automotive and battery production hubs across southern Germany and Central Europe, the Wernberg-Köblitz facility marks the first link in cylib’s regional collection and pre-treatment network. Through this location, the company aims to enhance access to end-of-life battery feedstocks and secure its upstream supply chain. The site is expected to enter service following regulatory approval under Germany’s Federal Immission Control Act (BImSchG).

The black mass produced at the Bavarian plant will serve as primary feedstock for cylib’s hydrometallurgical facility currently under construction in Dormagen, where critical raw materials such as lithium, graphite, nickel, cobalt, and manganese will be recovered. Following the installation of essential infrastructure and equipment, the site is projected to achieve full operational capacity by the end of 2027. This investment constitutes a central milestone in cylib’s broader roadmap toward establishing an end-to-end circular battery value chain.
