
A former coal mine in Minonk, Illinois, has been transformed into a clean energy hub through the redevelopment of a 40-acre brownfield site. Developed by TurningPoint Energy and operated by Nexamp, two new solar power facilities with a combined capacity of 9.8 MW are now supplying renewable electricity to the local grid. Equipped with 16,950 solar panels, the project has successfully repurposed previously abandoned industrial land into a certified brownfield renewable energy development. More than 650 households, along with major institutions such as Rush University Medical Center, are benefiting from lower energy costs while supporting a more sustainable future.
After serving as a coal mining site for 75 years, the area has been given a new purpose centered entirely on clean energy generation. One of the project’s most significant innovations is the deployment of Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) technology for the first time in the region. Similar to an intelligent traffic control system, the software balances fluctuating solar generation in real time according to weather conditions, helping maintain grid stability and reliability.
The project also delivers meaningful economic and social benefits to the local community. Around 200 low-income households enrolled in the program are receiving savings on their electricity bills. Ian Hughes from Rush University Medical Center described the initiative as a form of “preventive medicine,” emphasizing that reducing carbon emissions and improving air quality can generate long-term public health benefits.
Minonk Mayor Russell Ruestman noted that while the site was once known for coal mining, it has now become a symbol of the region’s clean energy future. By combining local renewable power generation with advanced smart grid technologies, the project demonstrates a practical and sustainable model for modernizing energy infrastructure while creating new value from former industrial land.
