
Australia has reached a major milestone in energy storage by commissioning the country’s first eight-hour Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) in New South Wales. Developed by RWE, the 50 MW/400 MWh facility utilizes 144 Tesla Megapack units to enhance grid stability and energy security. Located within the South-West Renewable Energy Zone, the project is integrated with an existing 314 MW solar farm, improving the efficiency, flexibility, and resilience of Australia’s electricity network.
The project forms part of New South Wales’ long-term energy transition strategy and plays a crucial role in managing renewable electricity generated by a large-scale solar facility spanning approximately 770 hectares in the Murray region. The battery system stores surplus solar energy during periods of high generation and dispatches it back to the grid when electricity demand increases. Developed in partnership with Tesla, Beon Energy Solutions, Lumea, and Transgrid, the facility connects directly to the existing 33 kV substation, reducing the need for additional transmission infrastructure.
The project is also the first to secure a Long-Term Energy Service Agreement (LTESA) for long-duration energy storage through a competitive procurement process managed by a subsidiary of the Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO). According to Sopna Sury, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, the facility marks an important step forward in the commercialization of long-duration battery storage technologies. The project demonstrates how advanced storage solutions can strengthen renewable energy integration while improving overall grid reliability.
RWE currently operates approximately 1.7 GW of battery storage capacity worldwide and continues to expand its global portfolio with an additional 2.5 GW of projects under development. The successful deployment of Australia’s first eight-hour battery storage system reinforces the growing role of long-duration energy storage in supporting renewable energy systems and ensuring a more resilient, low-carbon electricity grid.
