Vancouver-based Moment Energy has opened the world’s largest facility dedicated to repurposing retired electric vehicle batteries into reliable energy storage systems. Megafactory 1, which began operations on June 23, 2026, was completed just six weeks after being announced, allowing production to begin at remarkable speed. The facility aims to meet the growing energy demands of artificial intelligence technologies and data centers while bringing millions of retired EV batteries across North America back into productive use and supporting energy reliability for critical infrastructure.
The large-scale facility developed by Moment Energy produces sustainable energy storage solutions for hospitals, factories, data centers, microgrids, and other applications that require reliable power. Moment Energy CEO Edward Chiang highlighted the simultaneous growth in demand for energy storage and the supply of retired batteries, emphasizing that with the right technology, domestic manufacturing can be established in weeks rather than decades. This approach helps address energy shortages while creating thousands of new employment opportunities and supporting economic growth.
The factory aims to manufacture 1 GWh of battery energy storage systems by 2030 and is expected to create more than 100 direct and over 1,000 indirect jobs in British Columbia. Founded in 2020 and having attracted more than $100 million in investment to date, the company has also received the world’s first product and functional safety certification for its battery management system specifically developed for second-life batteries.
Supported by a $4.9 million investment from PacifiCan, the facility is strengthening local manufacturing while providing practical solutions to global energy challenges. Officials emphasize that the initiative will not only contribute to building a more sustainable future but also strengthen the resilience of the Canadian economy and create skilled employment opportunities for local communities.
